Saltwater conductivity, black sand and the three technologies that cope — what actually matters when choosing a beach metal detector for UK coasts.
Beach detecting demands more from a machine than any other UK environment — and it defeats detectors that perform perfectly well inland.
Saltwater conducts electricity. A detector works by generating an electromagnetic field and reading the response; wet salt sand responds as though it were itself a large, diffuse metal target. A single-frequency machine reads constant signal where there is nothing, and either becomes unusable or must be desensitised to the point of finding little. Black sand — heavily mineralised with iron oxides — compounds the problem.
Three technologies handle it: simultaneous multi-frequency, which processes several frequencies at once and separates ground response from target response; dedicated beach modes, which bias the processing for salt; and pulse induction, the specialist route. Work the tide: falling tide exposes fresh ground, and the low-water scallops where heavy objects settle. Check waterproof ratings honestly — a submersible coil under a rain-resistant control box is not a submersible detector. And know your beach’s rules: some UK foreshores need a permit (most of the Crown Estate foreshore allows detecting; always check locally).
