Searching for a gold prospecting metal detector is a different problem from choosing a coin and relic machine. Gold is low-conductivity, usually small, and almost always sits in heavily mineralised ground — the exact combination that defeats a standard VLF detector.
A £1,500 coin-and-treasure machine can walk straight over a sub-gram nugget. Three properties explain it: gold responds weakly at the frequencies coin machines favour, most natural gold is tiny, and gold country is full of ironstone and hot rocks that generate constant ground noise.
Dedicated gold detectors take one of two routes. High-frequency VLF machines trade depth for sensitivity to small, low-conductivity targets — ideal for shallow nugget patches. Pulse induction (PI) fires powerful pulses and reads the decay, largely ignoring mineralisation to reach serious depth, at the cost of discrimination. Natural UK gold is real but modest — Scottish and Welsh streams have produced it for centuries. Most British detectorists meet gold as jewellery and hammered coinage, which simultaneous multi-frequency machines handle perfectly well.
