A metal detecting rally puts hundreds of coils over the same field in a weekend. The detectorists who go home happy are rarely the ones with the most expensive machine — they are the ones who prepared.
Rally fields are noisy in every sense. Ground balance properly on arrival, and resist the urge to run sensitivity at maximum — with dozens of machines nearby, electromagnetic interference will punish you. A stable machine at moderate sensitivity out-finds an unstable one at full tilt every time.
The obvious lines get hammered in the first hour. Field edges, hedgerows, gateways, awkward slopes and the ground under thick stubble stay under-detected all weekend. Slow your swing and overlap properly — most missed finds are missed by speed, not depth.
Spare batteries or a power bank, a proper digging spade, a pinpointer, knee pads, a finds pouch, waterproofs and more water than you think you need. A pinpointer alone will save you an hour of digging across a weekend.
